The Notion of Choreography and Its Historical Formation : Focusing on the Dance Notation of Feuillet and Laban
안무의 초기 개념 연구 : 푀이에와 라반의 무용기보법을 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2019.55.317Asian Dance Journal
Vol.55
pp.317-351
This study probes how the notions of choreography has formed and changed in relation to dance notation. Two manuscripts, not by accident identically titled, are examined— Chorégraphie by Raoul-Auger Feuillet and Choreographie by Rudolf von Lavan—with regard to their respective understandings of the principles of dance and their socio-political contexts. This study brings Feuillet and Laban into a historical perspective beyond the previous literatures that solely focused on either of them. In Feuillet, choreography was defined as the composition of dance by means of notation. The space for dance was identified as flat and rectangular one, which led to the principles of ballet with the emphasis on geometrical shapes, establishing the two-dimensional plasticity as the aesthetic norm of the time. The act of composing dance by notating movement accompanied the emergence of the choreographer-subject which objectifies bodies of dancers, and thus the invention and development of dance notation was supported by the absolute monarchy out of its interest in the absolutistic body available to be controlled and disciplined. Laban developed the concept of choreography as the notation of forms and qualities of movement in space harmony. Laban theorized scales and rings in crystal space as new principles of movement, founding three-dimensional plasticity with its unceasing mobility as the aesthetic norm of modern dance. Complying with modernist ideal of progress and efficiency, Laban also applied his principles to choreograph movements of industrial bodies. Addressing manuscripts of Feuillet and Laban, and their contribution to the historical formation of the notions of choreography, this study unfolds the concepts of choreography in multilateral contexts, complementing and surpassing the prevalent, literal understanding of its meaning as dance-writing, which will provide the cornerstone for elucidating the historicity of choreography leading up to the present.

The Effect of the Construction of the Korea National Dance Center on the Aspect of Invigoration of Regional Dance
국립무용원 건립이 지역 무용 활성화에 미칠 영향
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.56.7Asian Dance Journal
Vol.56
pp.7-28
This paper discusses the impact of invigoration of regional dance on the basis of the need to construct the Korea National Dance Center. Under the premise that the Korea National Dance Center will establish branches in various regions along with a headquarter in Seoul, the impact on regional dance revitalization would include specializing regional dances, fostering local dancers, supporting programs that promote regional dances, developing networks between regions or at home and abroad, promoting theories and criticism of regional dance, and creating dance related jobs. The Preparatory Committe for the Korea National Dance Center is hoping that the center will provide a way to overcome much of the structural problems of the Korean dance field and overcome the field’s overall imbalance. In particular, it can have a more encouraging effect on invigoration of the dance field in each region as well as in Seoul, and this will naturally help to establish the global competence of Korean dance by distributing and expanding Seoul-centric activities across the country. In order to do this, rather than looking at the profits and losses of each dancer, it is necessary to make public voices for the entire dance field.

지역 대학 무용학과의 현황과 전망 : 대구⋅경북지역을 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.56.29Asian Dance Journal
Vol.56
pp.29-52
This study identifies the current status of dance departments at universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk and to raise the need to improve dance education programs and to seek a change in educational direction for dance departments facing the crisis of the abolition at the local universities. Starting with the department of dance at Hyosung Women's University (currently, Daegu Catholic University), which was established in 1974, the department of dance was established at Keimyung University (1984), the dance major at Yeungnam University (2002), and the department of practical dance at Daegu Art University (2004) in succession. The dance culture of Daegu and Gyeongbuk was formed and developed through dance education and creative activities have been centered on these universities. Today, however, with the rapid decline of the school-age population and the university restructuring policy, the dance departments at local universities face a crisis through the abolition, unification, downsizing of undergraduate majors and reform of specialty majors. Therefore, if the departments of dance at the local universities establish a step-by-step educational program that considers not only the admission process, but also student’s employment after graduation, and expand programs such as directing, management, stage, lighting as well as practical education centering on fine arts, and if each university presents a paradigm of specialized education to expand investment in creative dance education and to develop a new dance education ecosystem through the formation of a network between departments, community education institutions, and regional art creation agencies, they will grow into a continuous and future-oriented dance departments at local universities.

The Spatial Analysis of Taepyeongmu's Movement : An Analysis Using Rudolf von Laban's Theory of Space Harmony
태평무의 움직임 공간성 : 루돌프 폰 라반의 공간조화(Space Harmony) 이론을 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.56.75Asian Dance Journal
Vol.56
pp.75-95
The purpose of this study is to conduct a spatial analysis of movement in Taepyeongmu using Rudolf von Laban's theory of Space Harmony. Laban emphasizes that 'space' can grasp the nature of movement and that while Eastern and Western perspectives may differ, it can be dealt with in terms of the universality of dance. In this study, I analyse Teobeolim(터벌림, widening ground) and Olimchae(올림채, uplift). The results of the spatiality of Taepyeongmu are as follows. The major Crystalline forms are analyzed as icosahedrons in Teobeolim and as cubes in Olimchae. The results of the Effort analysis shows that Taepyeongmu displayed the Bound Flow of the lower body, while the spraying of the Hansam caused Light Weight in Teobeolim and Free Flow of the upper body is utilized elastically in Olimchae. The use of the effort is found not to be simple and uniform, but to occur in a variety of complex movements. Research of Taepyeongmu’s spatiality is not limited only in the form of perfect skill and performance that focus on the transfer of skills, but it can also provide a theoretical basis for an analysis of Korean dance, allowing more various interpretations and an application of more efficient and clear movements.

A Study on the Patterns of Documentary Records of Kyoukunshou (教訓抄) Observed through Batou (抜頭)
춤곡 <바토(拔頭)>를 통해 본 『교쿤쇼(教訓抄)』의 문헌기록 양상에 관한 연구
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.57.31Asian Dance Journal
Vol.57
pp.31-55
This article investigates the documentary recorda of Kyoukunshou (教訓抄, a musical book of gagaku) focusing on Batou (抜頭, one of the dances to belong of the Togaku). The record of Batou in Kyoukunshou has three following characteristics. First, it describes the history of Bugaku (舞楽, Japanese court dance) in such a manner that a comprehensive understanding of Batou from the its origin to its transfer and acceptance to Japan, actual performance, and transmission is possible. Second, it enables the grasping of theory, practice, and handing down situations of performances at a glance, and particularly in regard to the handing down of the performance, very detailed records have remained such that you can view the handing down chart of the tradition. Third, Japan's unique records, such as new motifs different from those found in Chinese records, are also found. This can be said to represent the process of transformation that has occurred while Tougaku (唐楽, style of gagaku based on Tang-era Chinese music and ancient Asia song and dance) from China has been settled down as Tougaku of Japan. Grasping the aspect of literature records in Kyoukunshou is like building a foundation for researching arts books written later. This study is significant in that it provided a clue for the study of Japanese Art books.

A Study on Aesthetic Principles of Spatiotemporal Resonance in Korean Medieval Dance : Focusing on Choi Han-gi's ‘Ki’ Theory
중세시기 한국춤 시공간의 감응과 미학적 원리 : 최한기의 감응기론을 중심으로
DOI:10.26861/sddh.2020.57.57Asian Dance Journal
Vol.57
pp.57-87
This study aims to examine the aesthetic resonance principle of Korean dance by analyzing how the place of Korean dance in the Middle Ages was influenced by the effect of dance through the ‘ki (氣, energy)’ theory by philosopher Choi Han-gi (1803~1879). As a research method, records related to dance were selected from historical literature, and Choi Han-gi's books were used as main texts, and related discourses were referenced. The original texts of the old documents used online databases with major old documents such as the National History Compilation Committee database, and keywords were limited to ‘mu (巫, shaman)’, ‘mu (舞, dance)’, and ‘chum (춤, dance)’. The results of the study are as follows. First, Korean dance was organically adapted to the spacetime of traditional society. Second, it was confirmed that the space of life was entangled as a place of dance in the traditional society. Third, it was possible to aesthetically explain that the principle of resonance in a special space called “sai (사이, between)” among dance places in traditional society was in ‘communication’. The main keywords of this study ―placeness, resonance, singi (神氣, primal energy), communication― are concepts that share the meanings of resonance as the nature of dance. The keywords are expected to contribute a academic and practical direction for today's dance theory.
