Abstract
An Analysis of UNESCO-Inscribed Intangible Cultural Heritage Related to Dance and the Inscription Strategy for ‘Korean Traditional Dance’+ ×

This article explores the conceptual design and strategy for inscribing “Traditional Dance of Korea” on the Lists under the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Rather than viewing inscription as cultural recognition or artistic evaluation, it examines how living dance practices can be defined, governed, and sustained within the Convention’s normative framework. The study comparatively analyzes dance-related elements on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, classifying them by form, social context, and mediating components such as music, costume, craft, and ritual. It also reviews the case of Modern Dance in Germany to illuminate tensions between artistic genres and community-based cultural practices. The article argues that Korean traditional dance should be presented not as fixed repertoires but as a dynamic assemblage of knowledge, skills, transmission systems, and performance contexts continually recreated by communities. Successful inscription, it contends, requires integrated design encompassing community-centered governance, linkage with national inventories, and safeguarding measures that prevent decontextualization. It concludes by proposing single-state, multinational, and extension pathways, offering scholarly and policy implications aligned with sustainability, cultural diversity, and community agency.

Abstract
The Value of Korean National Intangible Heritage Dances ×

This study aims to investigate the Koreanity of dance and its implication by analyzing the images of seven Korean National Intangible Heritage(Jinju-geommu, Seungjeonmu, Seungmu, Cheoyongmu, Hakyeonhwadae Hapseolmu, Taepyeongmu, Salpurichum). The research methods consist of literature review and in-depth interviews conducted in four stages: a pilot survey, the first expert interview, triangular verification, and the second expert interview. The results are as follows. First, the elements constituting Korean dance images are identifed as “2B7S”(Beat, Space, Breath, Shape, Story, Sense, Sensibility, Spirit, and Self-control). Second, five attributes of Koreanity are derived from the dance images: “Asymmetrical Figures” (Eogeutjim), “Stooping Figures” (Ogeum), “Laying-the-Foundation Movements” (Teodajim), “Left-Center-Right” (Jwajung-u), and “Curving Interlock” (Hwinmatmulrim). Third, these five attributes carry the implications of asymmetry, centripetal orientation, expandability, balance, and circularity, respectively. It is hoped that this study will serve as a foundation for further research on Koreanity across dance studies and other fields.

Abstract
A Study on the Categories of Traditional Dance in the Republic of Korea and the Significance of Their Inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List+ ×

This study aims to establish the category of Korean traditional dance, in which Korean aesthetic consciousness and spiritual culture are embedded. The purpose is to explore the cultural-historical and policy implications of its inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. By analyzing historical literature and current state of domestic transmission, the study approaches the subject from perspective of ‘typical form [jeonhyeong]’ the intersection of tradition and modern transmission. The results confirm that dance forms redefined as stage arts in the modern era constitute the foundation of contemporary Korean traditional dance Furthermore, UNESCO inscription facilitates the globalization of the identity of Korean arts and shifts the policy paradigm from ‘preservation’ to sustainable ‘transmission and promotion.’ This study is significant in proposing a cultural-historical category for Korean traditional dance and presenting policy recommendations for UNESCO inscription. It serves as a scholarly and policy foundation encompassing both the preservation of archetypal forms and modern re-creation.

Abstract
The Dance Aesthetics of Han Sung-jun and Kang Sun-Young as Revealed in Jeukhungmu+ ×

This study examines how Han Seongjun’s aesthetics in Jeukheungmu were transmitted to Gang Seonyeong. Using documents from the Joseon Music and Dance Institute and oral accounts from Gang and her successor Gim Miran, the study employs an interpretive method. Han’s instruction- “gcombine the learned movements and create your own dance”-shows his view of Jeukheungmu as a form of individuality and inner freedom. Gang embodied this lineage through affective contrasts of stillness and sudden release and the coexistence of joy and sorrow. Testimony on the “six movements” confirms Jeukheungmu as a core creative-pedagogical system reflecting Han’s aesthetics. This study clarifies how freedom and emotion are inherited within Korean dance.

Abstract
A Study on the Re-creation and Restoration of Korean Modern Dance Heritage ×

This study examines the significance of shin minyo dance, a modern dance heritage that was popular from the 1930s to the 1960s, with particular focus on the works of Bae Guja, who created dances based on the folk songs Cheonan Samgeori and Doraji Taryeong. Employing a practice-based research methodology, the study centers on the processes of re-enactment and restoration, while analyzing the reproduction of these works in a contemporary context. The findings reveal that the living transmission of cultural heritage lies not merely in reproduction or restoration, but more importantly in the modern succession and sustainability of dance that reflects both national identity and regional characteristics. Furthermore, this research proposes creative methodologies for integrating the cultural value of traditional dance into contemporary society and underscores the significance of modern succession of modern dance heritage.

Abstract
Exploring the Development Process of DanceSports in Korea and China ×

This study examines the development process of dancesports in Korea and China and suggests future development direction in order to provide a reference for the scientific and systematic development of dance sports in the two countries. To this end, we analyze and compare the literature on the development process of dancesports in Korea and China. The analysis shows that, compared to developed countries, the two nations fall short in terms of technical expertise and organizational management approaches. In the future, to promote the development of dancesports in both countries, it is necessary to raise public awareness, strengthen education within universities, and shift towards specialization and generalization, reflecting the cultural characteristics of each nation. This analysis shows that the balanced development of dancesports between Korea and China helps strengthen the country's competitiveness.

Abstract
A Study on Structure System of the Kim Paik-bong’s Basic Dance ×

This study analyzes the structural and characteristics principles of the ‘Basic Dance’ established by Kim Paik-bong. As research methods, I conduct archival research, oral histories from in-depth interviews, and an embodied observation analysis based on practice-based research. As a result, I illuminate the background of the formation of the format and the foundation of the structural system, and classify the structural principles with seven elements to identify the characteristics. ‘Kim Paik-bong’s Basic Dance’ is a ‘technical system’, ‘movement principle system’, and ‘shaping principle system’, which can be defined as the typicality, identity, and uniqueness of Kim Paik-bong dance, a latent creative concept and principle. Therefore, the Basic Dance of Kim Paik-bong is the cornerstone of creative repository in identifying and preserving her artistic world. As the foundation of her art form, it will present the ideal of recreation as a ‘prototype’ and ‘example’.

Abstract
The Impact of Social Network Service-based Communication of Korean Traditional Dancers on Organizational Commitment of Dance Companies ×

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of SNS-based communication on organizational commitment among Korean dancers. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Ver. 29.0, employing frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis to derive the research findings. SNS communication significantly influenced all three types of organizational commitment: continuance commitment, normative commitment, and affective commitment. Specifically, clear responses and empathy had the most substantial impact on continuance commitment, while information sharing and empathy were most influential for normative commitment. Affective commitment was primarily affected by clear responses. The study also revealed that excessive use of SNS could have a negative impact by fostering comparison and competition, which could hinder organizational commitment. Therefore, dance organizations should develop strategies to enhance positive communication through SNS while minimizing its negative effects.

Abstract
A Study on the Characteristics of Korean Ballet in Juri’s Blue Dopo + ×

The purpose of this study is to explore the common Korean characteristics in the works of choreographers who were active in the same era as choreographer Juri, of “Blue Dopo” This paper is a literature study, and the results are as follows. First, from 1955 to 1970 the influence of the Korean War and the military regime, encouraged a search for Korean culture, promoting choregraphers to produce work related to Korea. In addition, since the National Dance Company was the only “national” dance organization, it is believed that choreographers internalized the cultural reforms of the government and projected Korean characteristics into their works. Second, the core theme of “Blue Dopo”which was created by Juri adapting the Spanish folk tale “Triangle Hat,” is based on orean folktales, poems, folk paintings, and legends. Therefore the costumes combine hanbok and ballet tights, the music is Korean and Western, and both Korean dance and Western movement is combined. It is meaningful in modern art history to re-examine Juri’s addition of Korean ethnic characteristics to Western themes as she was the iinfluential first female choreographer and founding member of the National Dance Company.
