Abstract
Aspects of the Usage of the Hangeul Term Chum in Eonhae Texts of the Joseon Dynasty ×

This study examines 70 instances of the Korean word chum(춤) found in ten Joseon-period eonhae (Korean vernacular translations) to investigate its earliest textual appearance and patterns of use through an analysis of its translation, orthography, and reference. The findings show that the earliest attested instance of chum in extant hangeul texts appears in Seokbosangjeol (1447). Chum was repeatedly selected as a translation equivalent for ‘舞’ and ‘儛’ and was used over a long period while maintaining a stable orthographic form. At the same time, it exhibited inclusive and open referential patterns that crossed diverse social conditions and boundaries of value. These findings reveal historical aspects of chum that cannot be fully captured from perspectives formed since the modern period and provide a basis for reconsidering perceptions of chum from a longer historical perspective.

Abstract
A Study on the Creation and Reproduction of Jinsoe Dance ×

This study aims to investigate how Jinsoe Chum, rooted in Gyeonggi Dodanggut, has been adopted and transformed as a stage art, and to elucidate its aesthetic value. It further seeks to demonstrate the potential for Fexpanding the artistic appearance of Jinsoe Chum, and to explore a sustainable transmission methodology for traditional dance in a rapidly changing contemporary arts environment. To this end, this study traces the transmission processes of Lee Dongahn and Jo Heungdong lineages through literature review and performance analysis, and closely examines the staging of Jinsoe Chum in the Korean National Dance Company’s Hyangyeon. The finding confirms that Jinsoe Chum has been re-established as a ‘creative tradition’ that combines withmodern theatrical conventions while maintaining its shamanic sacrality. This shows the process by which Korean traditional dance achieves an ‘aesthetic modernity’ attuned to contemporary sensibilities, and suggests a value orientation that extends the boundary beyond the fixed archetype.

Abstract
A Study on Expressive Characteristics of Kim Baik-bong Sanjo Dance Chung myung shim su ×

The purpose of this study is to identify expressive characteristics by examining the choreographic intention and movement meaning of the scarf-dance part in the Kim Baik-bong Sanjo Dance “Cheongmyeong Shimsu”. The study utilizes literature research and participatory observation methods, including in-depth interviews and embodiment. The analysis criteria on the relationship between the dancer and the scarf were based on movement emphasizing technical aspects and movements focusing on emotional exchange. The expressive characteristics of movements can be organized into 12 categories such as “mother's love,” “life's solid experience,” “life's reincarnation,” and “deep and full sadness.” In “Cheongmyeong Shimsu”, the scarf is not just a prop but contains the choreographer's philosophy and ideals. It also conveys emotions effectively, which helps the theme of dance be delivered clearly. “Cheongmyeong Shimsu” is the work that represents Kim Baik-bong's dance language that is self-reflective; it is also healing.

Abstract
Aesthetic Interpretation of Salpuri-chum through Adorno Mimesis ×

The purpose of this thesis is to interpret Salpuri-chum from the perspective of Adorno's mimesis and derive its argument from an aesthetic point of view. As a research method, a literature search method was used, and theoretical horizon research was conducted centering on 『Aesthetic Theory』 (1984), one of Adorno's books, and research was conducted centering on theses and academic journals related to aesthetic approaches. As a result, the theoretical horizon was derived by classifying firstly the meaning of Adorno mimesis, secondly Salpuri-chum as an aesthetic study, and thirdly Salpuri-chum through Adorno mimesis. This study contains the simple desire of the researcher to further expand the artistic value of Salpuri-chum, explore and analyze it from various perspectives, and inherit the preservation value of cultural and historical importance. And it is hoped that this study will contribute to the knowledge and appreciation of Salpuri-chum in a more developed form.

Abstract
A Study on Maru in Korean Traditional Dance + ×

Maru refers to a basic paragraph in Korean traditional dance, which can be long or short, depending on the performance conditions or the environment. This research aims to determine if there is a paragraph corresponding to Maru in court dance based on the previous study of Han Yeongsuk's Buddhist dance and Mokjung Dance of Bongsan Mask Dance. To this end, Cheoyongmu and Chunaengjeon, representative dances of Hyangakjeongjae, are studied in this paper. Furthermore, the paragraph that was classified by the Jipbagaksa hitting "Bak" was collectively referred to as "Bak paragraph" and the previous methodology on analyzing Maru was applied. As a result of this study, the following results have been obtained. First, the elements that make up "Bak paragraph" of court dance and Maru of traditional dance are lexical chumsawi. Both show similarities in meaning, type, and composition. The court martial arts series, however, shows independence of form and meaning through a simpler and more stable pattern. Furthermore, "Bak paragraph" and the Maru of traditional dance convey a certain message despite slight differences in their compositions. In addition, Maru refers to the phrase of court music as well as the instrumental music of Pungryubang, a chorus or refrain of a folk song. Therefore, "Bak paragraph" and Maru reflect the characteristics of court dance. Also, "Back paragraph" that contains specificity can be considered to represent Maru in a comprehensive sense.

Abstract
Exploration of Lee Ae-ju’s Dance and the Philosophy of Life in Her Dance Theory ×

This article explores the philosophy of life contained in Lee Ae-ju’s dance and its theory from a critical perspective. I first discussed the planning intentions of the three works of Lee Ae-ju’s Creative Dance Ttangkkeut, Nanumgut bap, and Balloon Flower, as well as the view of life of her dance. Secondly, the traditional dances of Seungmu, Salpurichum, and Taepyeongchum were explained, and Lee Ae-ju's artistic life and dance worldview were examined. Finally, the meaning and nature of the Lee Ae-ju’s dance, intended to be expressed across traditional and creative dances, were identified and the philosophy of life within it was explored.

An artist who has contributed significantly to the prosperity and development of Korean dance; an innovator who has steered her craft toward opening doors to a new world of creative positivity, Lee Ae-ju was such an artist. While traditional dance of the past and modern forms of creative dance have often been in conflict, Lee’s nationally designated dance has spread its wings defying a century of creative ideology. By adding excitement and style to the rhythm, her art has sublimated dance into a form that embraces rebirth with joy. Through her dance, she gave new life to the creative spark of her field and helped instilling hope for both freedom of expression and democratization.

Abstract
Development of Ohaeng Eumseong Chum based on BRACED Principles of Somatic Movement ×

In this study, we explore the principles of somatic movement inherent in Eastern psychosomatic disciplines with the aim of developing a somatic movement program for well-being. Taking into consideration the principle known as ‘BRACED’, we examined the Kishinbeop of Kouksundo and the Yukjagigyeol of Hwalinshimbang whose training methods are based upon the relationship between Yin and Yang and the five elements (water, fire, wood, metal and earth) and viscera, and developed the ‘Ohaeng Eumseong Chum’ program. The water dance is a movement that strengthens the kidneys and bladder, paired with the sound of ‘Chwi-’. The fire dance strengthens the heart and small intestine with the sound of ‘Whaw-’. The wood dance is for the lungs and large intestines, and makes the sound of ‘S-’. The earth dance is composed of movements for the spleen and stomach accompanied by the sound ‘Hoo-’. This study contributes to the development somatic movement and to the study of well-being movement, which can help dancers and individuals to get to know their bodies and live a long and healthy life.

Abstract
The Study of Kim Su-ak’s Salpuri-chum ×

This study is about the Kim Su-ak’s Salpuri-chum focusing on Jinju region. The methods of studying are direct learning and collecting basic sources such as interviews and technical training from Kim Su-ak. Kim Su-ak first acquired Salpuri-chum while learning various dances from Choi Soon-i who was a dancing master of Jinju Gwonbeon (Female Entertainers’ School in Jinju Region). But she formed her own syle Salpuri-chum with adding her artistic talents. The progress of this study was as follows: first, learned the formation of Kim’s Salpuri-chum. Second, analyzed the features of Kim’s Salpuri-chum while dividing the dance into incidental music, important dance phrase, and aesthetic characteristics. As the result, both Kim’s Salpuri-chum and Salpuri-chum in Jinju Gwonbeon style give strong feelings to the dancer or the audience with the pleasure rather than the sorrow; also these dances suggest a dynamic image rather than a static image. While as Kim’s Salpuri-chum is recognized artistic value, but unfortunately, the dance was not been designated as intangible cultural heritage. Therefore the rate for learning students for this dance is relatively decreased. However, this dance perfectly contains a unique and intact form of local dance movements in Youngnam (Southern regions of Korea), so that the study of this dance will be playing a role to reveal the historicity of Jinju dance. Also, I hope to enlarge various bases of Kim’s Salpuri-chum.

Abstract
The epidemic-dispelling characteristics in the circulating structure of the Bongsan mask dance palmokjungchum : the dance of eight mokjung ×

This paper investigated the characteristics of guna, which are ritual actions to dispel epidemics, by analyzing the structure of formative meaning and circulation in palmokjungchum (the dance of eight mokjung), the second chapter of Korea’s traditional Bongsan mask dance. Figures in this research depict images of a dance performance that took place on May 31, 1992, which were provided by the Society for Preserving Bongsan Mask Dance. The second chapter of the dance was divided into three structural stages: an appearance of the first mokjung, the one-to-one entrance and exit of the eight mokjung, and the circulating structure of the rotating dance. The findings are as follows. First, the choreography of the first mokjung was incremental, representing the qualities of wood (木), which is one of the five primary elements. The dance during this stage embodies birth and growth through the union of yin and yang and emulates this natural phenomenon. Just as circulation is found in nature, epidemics retreat on their own accord during the ritual of guna. Second, the characteristics of guna are depicted by the one-to-one entrance and exit of the mokjung and by repetition of the same choreography. The entrances and exits are repeated, signifying the circulating relationship of yin and yang. The yin-yang juxtaposition of the mokjung is depicted by different characters, who go back and forth between confrontation and union. This alternation is indicative off the presence of circulation in nature, where time is continuously pushed back and replaced by subsequent time. This concept is represented by the character of guna, who dispels epidemics. Third, the number eight is the number of divination, and when laid out in circular forms, it illustrates the principle of circulation. The beginning and end of the line forms a circle, and the dance by the palmokjung incorporates continuous rotational moves (juibusi) that are reminiscent of the nature-emulating circulation observed in the Cheoyongmu (the dance of Cheoyong). The two dances share epidemic-dispelling characteristics. This indicates that in the second chapter of the Bongsan mask dance, nature’s circulation is a key motive for the choreography, which reveals the righteousness and confidence of nature, unbiased by any of the four seasons. Like nature, epidemics have a structure in which the old is inevitably replaced by the new. The primary characteristic of guna relates to how epidemics retreat from confrontation, where two opposing forces are not able to overcome the other, which is based on the principle of harmonious existence between yin and yang. The objectives of this study were to provide a more insightful understanding of the unique ideas and beliefs inherent in Korea’s traditional Bongsan mask dance and to provide a foundation for more diversified perspectives in the study and understanding of traditional Korean culture.

A Review of Han Sung Jun’s Dance Works : Tracing Back His Social Awareness and Dance Perspective

Abstract
A Review of Han Sung Jun’s Dance Works : Tracing Back His Social Awareness and Dance Perspective ×

Han Sung Jun has been recognized as an extraordinary figure who collected traditional Korean dances and laid a foundation for systematic transmission during the late Chosun Dynasty and Japanese colonial period. Due to his significance, there have been ample researches in the past. However, there seemed to be some rooms for re-examination within the cultural contexts. The purpose of this study was to re-examine Han Sung Jun’s dance works, more specifically his social awareness as well as his dance perspective. Archives of his direct interviews were utilized for this task. Han Sung Jun, as an artist who experienced both feudal and colonial times, considered his life as a ‘shame.’ Based on this notion, he maintained his cultural identity during the abrupt changing times from the West dignity and accepted his fateful mission on traditional dance. Han Sung Jun focused on the principles of dance with open mindedness and holistic thoughts. Han Sung Jun’s three major dance works, ‘Seung Mu’, ‘Tae Pyung Mu’, and ‘Salpuri Chum’, were analyzed for better understanding using historical sources and Han Sung Jun’s thought. ‘Seung Mu’ was not just a form of religious dance but the crux of traditional dance cementing several cultures and ideologies. ‘Tae Pyung Mu’ could be viewed not only a dance for peaceful time and strong reign, but a dance for just society where all people were treated equal and lived an harmonious community. Lastly, ‘Salpuri Chum’ had the most liberal form and reflected the dancer’s emotion and could be regarded as the dance form with open possibilities.
